Dr. Joel Mayer
Criminal and other legal proceedings involving forensic science require special knowledge to assist the trier of fact. Dr. Joel Mayer was involved in thousands of coroner’s death investigations, inquests, hearings, and criminal trials in all levels of court in Ontario. He was qualified to provide expert evidence in relation to the effects of alcohol and drugs on human behaviour, their fate in the body and their potential toxicities, in matters involving murder, assault, alcohol and drug-impaired driving, workplace drug testing, and professional disciplinary actions.
During his 12-year tenure as Deputy Director, Scientific Affairs, at the Ontario Centre of Forensic Sciences, Dr. Mayer provided oversight and direction to the scientific sections that conducted testing in biology, chemistry, questioned documents, firearms, and toxicology. He is able to offer knowledge and expertise to assist in the review of forensic files to determine what are the appropriate inferences that can be drawn from laboratory test results, in order to reach the necessary conclusions regarding their investigative and probative value.
